Government of Maharashtra started promoting food grain based alcohol production. The government is offering huge subsidy to the food grain based alcohol manufacturer under the scheme titled – ‘Food Grain based Liquid and Integrated Material Financial Aid – 2007’ (धान्याधारित आसवनी व एकात्मिक घटक अर्थसहाय्य – 2007).

  

We think this policy is unethical in both social and financial point of view. This policy is going to affect directly and indirectly to large section of the society including poor and rich and rural and urban both. We are running a campaign against this policy.

धान्यापासून दारूनिर्मितीचे अनेक चमत्कार पाहायला मिळू लागले असून, अमित विलासराव देशमुख यांच्या लातूरच्या अल्कोप्लस कारखान्याने टाकाऊ ज्वारी तब्बल ११.५० रुपये दराने खरेदी केली आहे; फरक एवढाच, की हे धान्य शेतकऱ्यांकडून नव्हे, तर व्यापाऱ्यांकडून खरेदी करण्यात आले आहे.‘या कारखान्यांमध्ये दारू नव्हे तर औद्योगिक अल्कोहोल निर्माण होणार’ असा दावा केंद्रीय अवजड उद्योगमंत्री विलासराव देशमुख  करत असले, तरी त्यांच्या पुत्राच्या कारखान्यातील ९५ टक्के ज्वारी दारू गाळण्यासाठी वापरण्यात आल्याचे स्पष्ट झाले आहे.

धान्यातून मद्यनिर्मितीविरोधात कार्यरत असलेल्या ‘निर्माण’ या संस्थेने माहितीच्या अधिकारात मागविलेल्या कागदपत्रांमधून याबाबतचे अनेक ‘चमत्कार’ दृश्य होऊ लागले आहेत. विशेषत: केंद्रीय अवजडउद्योग मंत्री आणि माजी मुख्यमंत्री विलासराव देशमुख यांचे चिरंजीव अमित व धीरज यांच्या लातूर येथील कारख्यान्यातील बरेच चमत्कार या निमित्ताने उघड झाले आहेत. शासनाच्या या धोरणाचा विरोध करण्यासाठी आज राज्यभरातील 28 संघटनांनी ‘धान्यापासून दारू विरोधी अभियाना’ अंतर्गत एकत्र येऊन ‘हुतात्‍मा दिनी’ म्‍हणजे महात्मा गांधीच्या पुण्यतिथी दिवशी मुंबईतील आझाद मैदानात धरणे धरली.

धान्यापासून दारू निर्मितीला विरोध करण्यासाठी मुंबईमध्ये ११ जानेवारी, २०१० रोजी रेशनिंग कृती समिती, महिला राजसत्ता आंदोलन, स्त्री मुक्ती संघटना, निर्माण अशा विविध क्षेत्रात कार्य करणार्‍या एकूण २२ संस्थांनी मिळून एका परिषदेचे आयोजन केले होते.

या परिषदेमध्ये शासनाच्या धान्यापासून दारू निर्मिती प्रस्तावाला विरोध करणारा ठराव संमत केला आणि कृती कार्यक्रमाची आखणी केली. (अधिक माहितीसाठी वाचा)

Do you really support the decision of Government of Maharashtra of making liquor from food-grains? Offering crores of subsidies to liquor manufacturers to share their financial burden? If NOT then we must express our protest, because feeling in heart is not enough it must get reflected. In democracy, Government not only represents supports of its people but also represents the actions, thoughts, wisdom and ethics of its people. If you are not agree with this policy of the government, then we must raised our voice.

All citizens, farmer organizations, youth organizations, women organizations, self-help groups, associations of senior citizens, residential welfare organizations should come together to demonstrate the solidarity against the decision of the government.

Will fasting solve the problem?

Dear Friends,
Many people have brought up questions of what the fast entails and how a fast can help solve the actual problem of alcohol being manufactured from food grains. These are extremely valid questions.

The day of fast or Uposhan, we ask that people do not eat/drink anything except water and observe a fast for 24 hrs (medical conditions permitting).

The idea of the fast is a symbolic call to action. The common man, each one of us, should be enabled to make a statement against the Government’s unreasonable decision to subsidize the use of food grains in alcohol production. The fast allows us to actively participate in our everyday lives. The purity of our act matters. First, we purify ourselves and express our commitment to the cause by a small, yet concrete action and then we build solidarity among like-minded citizens.

During Indian Freedom movement, Mahatma Gandhi had suggested the method of Individual Satyagraha. What we are doing is the 21st century model of that idea.

This may not solve the problem. But this is the first step in mobilizing response and action across various regions and demographics of people. Solidarity, support and commitment are necessary to put pressure on the government and precipitate change. This one act alone will not guarantee success. However, this step allows us to form a network of committed individuals that will further the cause. We need to seize the moment and do all that we can. A combination of a broad range of actions and voices will ensure victory.

If a large number of people do this for many days, it certainly will have an impact.

Everything finally boils down to one simple principle, करके देखो! Karke Dekho! Do It!

• The policy is the waste of money owned by people for benefits of few individuals
• It will increase the food-grain prices.
• It will cause food-grain shortage in coming years.
• The policy will have adverse effect on public distribution system
• It will increase the alcohol consumption in the society.
• The policy will incur direct loss of Rs. 1-1.2 billion (Rs. 100-120 crores) per year in form of excise duty to state government of Maharashtra. (read more)
